Hi, I'm Mateo Johnson

I'm a dual enrollment high school and college student, as well as an aspiring engineer with a strong passion for robotics, control systems, embedded systems and avionics. I’ve led my school’s robotics team to multiple victories and am always seeking opportunities to expand my knowledge.

Beyond robotics, I enjoy creating open-source software like my Glimmer website builder, and teaching young students about the wonders of STEM.

My Journey

2014

Introduction to STEM

My grandfather fostered my love of computer science and engineering as best as he could, teaching me about mechanical, electrical and computer engineering.

2018

Learned First Language

I learned Arduino specific C++, which then eventually led to normal C++. These languages were mainly used for Arduino programming, in addition to other similar microntrollers.

2019

Started Community Outreach

Began mentoring younger students in robotics and computer science, organizing workshops to inspire the next generation of engineers.

2020

Learned 3-4 more languages

Once the US went into lockdown in early 2020, I had so much time on my hands, that I decided it would be worthwhile to learn Python, Java, HTML, CSS and JS during the time I was not doing schoolwork.

2022

Joined My Schools Robotics Team

I joined my schools robotics team, The Metrobots. I joined as a programming manager due to prior experience, but helped with other subgroups too.

Skills & Experience

Throughout my journey, I’ve developed a wide array of skills in various fields of engineering and technology. For more detail please visit my Skills Page. Here is an overview of the key areas I focus on:

Robotics

Programming, building, and testing robots. I enjoy working with both electrical and mechanical engineering, as well as the computer science part. I wrote the code for a Swerve Drive drivetrain fully from scratch.

Software Development

Web development, apps, and open-source tools. I have made tools for my FRC team, Embold (The company I interned for) and personal use.

Embedded Systems

Working with microcontrollers and sensors, ranging from Arduinos to more complicated FPGAs, even making my own.

STEM Outreach

In my time off of school, I enjoy mentoring and teaching younger students. I enjpoy spreading STEM to future generations.

CAD and EDA

Using Onshape and Fusion360 for CAD design, along with LTSpice, EasyEDA and KiCAD for EDA, I enjoy making boards and models for personal and other projects.

Hobbies & Interests

When I’m not diving into the world of engineering and programming, I have a range of hobbies and interests that keep me inspired and grounded. Here’s a glimpse into what I enjoy:

Photography

I enjoy capturing landscapes, portraits, and macro shots. Photography allows me to explore creativity and appreciate the beauty around me. I especially enjoy taking pictures of natural landscapes and buildings.

Listening to Music

Listening to music is one of my favorite ways to unwind. A couple of my favorite artists include Nas, J. Cole, Kendrick Lamar, Sabrina Carpenter and Laufey. Music manages to bring balance to my busy life.

Gaming

As a fan of strategy, puzzle and FPS games, I love challenging myself with creative problem-solving in a fun and competitive environment, whether in board or video games.

DIY Projects

From building custom electronics to small woodworking projects, I’m always eager to work on hands-on projects that push my creativity and technical skills. I enjoy making gifts for my family and friends.

Spending Time Outdoors

Hiking, biking, and exploring nature help me recharge and stay connected with the environment. Over Fall 2024, I completed the 62nd annual TOSRV, which is a 200 mile bike race.

Art

One of my favorite ways to decompress is to create art, mainly drawing, but also occasionally paintings. I started art when I was young, because it allowed me to express myself in a way that couldn't be controlled by any outside force.

My Goals

As an aspiring researcher and academic, I am dedicated to pushing the boundaries of innovation and knowledge. These goals reflect my ambition to excel in advanced studies, contribute meaningful research, and create a lasting impact in my chosen field.

Excel in Advanced Academics

Gain admission to a top-tier university renowned for its engineering and research programs. Immerse myself in an intellectually rigorous environment to master advanced theories and methodologies in control systems and avionics.

Contribute to Groundbreaking Research

Collaborate with leading academics and industry experts on innovative projects, particularly in aerospace technologies. Publish impactful research papers in reputable journals to advance the field and establish a strong academic foundation.

Engage in STEM Advocacy and Outreach

Leverage my academic journey to inspire and mentor aspiring students. Develop workshops and mentorship programs that demystify STEM subjects, encouraging diverse participation in scientific and engineering research worldwide.

Innovate Through Open Research

Initiate and contribute to open-source academic projects that address complex challenges in engineering and science. Share findings and tools widely to enhance collaboration and foster a culture of global scientific discovery.
